City of Columbus mark Africa Day Celebration

Published:

The heart of downtown Columbus pulsed with rhythm, color, and community spirit as the city hosted its 3rd Annual Africa Day Celebration at City Hall on May 22. The event, organized by the Columbus City Council in collaboration with African leaders across the city, commemorated the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union) and honored the diverse African communities that enrich the city’s cultural tapestry.

Attendees were treated to a vibrant marketplace featuring African clothing and jewelry vendors, captivating spoken word and dance performances, and a keynote address that underscored the significance of African heritage and unity.

The first 100 guests enjoyed complimentary African cuisine, adding a flavorful touch to the festivities. The celebration also highlighted the contributions of African immigrants to the Columbus metro area. According to a report commissioned by the City of Columbus, African immigrants contributed 11.5% of the area’s gross domestic product and paid $712 million in state and local taxes in 2019, surpassing their share of the population.

The Africa Day event served as a platform to strengthen the Columbus–Accra Sister City relationship, fostering collaborations in health, education, and economic development.

Earlier in May, a Ghanaian delegation visited Columbus to explore partnerships with local institutions, including The Ohio State University and Columbus Public Health, aiming to enhance bilateral cooperation. As the evening concluded, attendees expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate African culture and unity. The event not only honored the rich heritage of African nations but also reinforced Columbus’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and global partnerships.
