January 2024 marked a historic milestone for the City of Upper Arlington, Ohio as Ukeme Awakessien Jeter was appointed the city’s first Black Mayor. Marking a significant step forward in the community’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Her journey from an engineer to a legal advocate and now the city’s leading official is a testament to her dedication and multifaceted expertise. She became the 35th Mayor of the City, the 5th Female to climb the ladder and the 1st Black Mayor of the city.
A Multifaceted Professional
Ukeme’s professional background is as diverse as it is impressive. She began her career as a mechanical engineer, earning her B.S. from the University of Maine, where she also showcased her athletic prowess in track and field. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to obtain an MBA from the University of Massachusetts – Lowell, and subsequently, a J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. Currently, she serves as a partner at Taft Law, focusing on intellectual property and aiding clients in bringing innovative products and services to market.
A Commitment to Community

Since moving to Upper Arlington in 2018, Ukeme has immersed herself in community service. Her roles have included serving on the Community Relations Committee, the 2019 Citizen Financial Review Committee, and participating in Leadership Upper Arlington’s class of 2019. Her dedication to fostering an inclusive environment is evident through her involvement with the Ohio Legal Help Board of Directors and the United Way of Central Ohio’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council.
Historic Leadership
In 2021, Ukeme shattered a century-old barrier by becoming the first person of color elected to Upper Arlington’s City Council. Her peers recognized her leadership qualities, selecting her as Council President and Mayor in January 2024. In this role, she presides over council meetings and fulfills ceremonial duties, guiding the city with a vision rooted in inclusivity and progress.

Balancing Roles
Beyond her professional and civic responsibilities, Ukeme is a devoted mother of two and an active community member. Residing in the Greensview neighborhood, she and her family engage in city events, explore local parks, and enjoy activities like biking and family games. Her personal experiences as a mother and resident enrich her perspective as a leader, ensuring that she remains attuned to the needs and aspirations of Upper Arlington’s citizens.
She is also an author with her book titled “IMMIGRIT”

Ukeme’s leadership is characterized by a forward-thinking approach, aiming to navigate the city through times of change with intentional and compassionate governance. Her unique blend of technical expertise, legal acumen, and community involvement positions her to effectively address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Upper Arlington.
As Mayor Ukeme Awakessien Jeter continues to serve, she embodies the mantra she lives by: “Be the change you wish to see.” Her journey reflects a harmonious blend of professional excellence, community dedication, and a pioneering spirit, inspiring residents and setting a precedent for future leadership in Upper Arlington.
Ukeme Awakessien Jeter was honored at the 2024 Herstory Makers by the Columbus Urban League for her leadership and trailblazing achievement in her city.



Mayor Ukeme Awakessien Jeter, the first Black Mayor and Council President of Upper Arlington, Ohio, was also honored with the Governor’s Special Award during Akwa Ibom State’s 37th anniversary celebrations in Nigeria. This accolade celebrates her trailblazing contributions and serves as a bridge between her current leadership role in the United States and her roots in Akwa Ibom State.
