In response to growing apprehensions within Columbus’s immigrant communities regarding federal immigration enforcement, Mayor Andrew Ginther recently convened a meeting with faith leaders to address these issues. The gathering aimed to provide clarity and support to residents affected by the actions of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The meeting, held at Glorious Studios in Columbus, Ohio, brought together approximately 60 faith leaders representing the city’s diverse immigrant populations. Mayor Ginther emphasized the city’s commitment to inclusivity and reassured attendees that Columbus would not participate in federal immigration crackdowns. He stated, “We are a welcoming city, and we will not assist ICE in their enforcement actions.”

This initiative comes amid reports of increased ICE activities in various parts of the country, leading to heightened fear among undocumented individuals. In Columbus, unconfirmed rumors about ICE operations have spread, causing anxiety within immigrant communities.
Faith leaders play a crucial role in supporting immigrant families, offering both spiritual guidance and practical assistance. By engaging with these leaders, Mayor Ginther aims to ensure that accurate information is disseminated and that residents feel supported during uncertain times.
Community advocates have also voiced concerns about the impact of ICE raids, noting that many individuals are fearful of engaging in daily activities such as going to work or sending their children to school. These fears underscore the importance of local government and community organizations working together to provide reassurance and resources to affected populations.
Mayor Ginther’s proactive approach reflects a broader commitment to maintaining Columbus as a city where all residents, regardless of immigration status, feel safe and valued. By fostering open dialogue and collaboration with faith leaders, the city aims to navigate the challenges posed by federal immigration policies while upholding its values of diversity and inclusion.
